1975

With the financial interests of its members in mind, The Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation (OSSTF) establishes the Ontario Teachers Group Retirement Savings Plan.

The plan includes four funds: Money Market Fund, Mortgage & Income Fund, Growth Fund, and U.S. Equity Fund. By the end of the year, the plan grows to over $1.5 million in assets.

1976

Traditional banks see educators as risky ‘seasonal’ workers.

Ontario Teachers Group Retirement Savings Plan funds its first mortgage.

1984

Ontario Teachers Group Inc. is incorporated and registered as a Mutual Fund Dealer.

2003

Ontario Teachers Group Inc. is renamed to OTG Financial Inc.

2007

We move headquarters to our current home on Sheppard Avenue East.

2008

OTG Financial Inc. rebrands and becomes Educators Financial Group Inc.

We rapidly expand our team to better assist education members across Ontario.

2009

A new bursary program is introduced to help support professional growth for young educators.

The bursary helps relieve the financial burden facing those pursuing continuing education.

2011

Educators Financial Group registers as a mortgage brokerage in Ontario.

2018

Educators Monitored Portfolios® are introduced and offer four different portfolios
to help simplify investing.

2020

New, low-fee E-series mutual funds are offered exclusively with Educators
RESPs to make saving for your child’s future easier than ever.

2023

The Educators Family of Funds surpass $1 billion in assets under management.

We’re certified as a Great Place to Work and recognized as one of the Best
Workplaces™ in Canada.

2024

New Educators BrighterFuture Bond Fund® and Educators BrighterFuture Global
Equity Fund® offer investment options to help clients invest in their future and the planet’s.

Plus, a reimagined online access experience is launched to make it easier for
clients to achieve their financial goals.

2025

Educators Financial Group celebrates 50 years of helping the Ontario education

Ahmed brings a world of experience to his position at Educators – literally. After studying economics in Lausanne, Switzerland, and living in Dubai, Qatar and Egypt, he decided to build his future in Canada. With the Canadian Securities Course, Personal Financial Planner designation, and 7 years working with RBC under his belt, he now helps others create their futures as well. “Canada welcomed me almost 10 years ago and ever since I’ve tried to give back, providing advice to help Canadians grow their assets, maximize their retirement income and achieve their lifetime goals.” Ahmed’s grandfather was the Dean of a college, giving him an insider’s perspective of the education community. He is also fully bilingual in French and English. Ahmed appreciates Educators’ focus on the community and how it provides valuable, in-depth advice around issues unique to the education community, such as understanding the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan and OMERS pension, and navigating pension income gaps.

Peter von SchillingICD.D, CIM

Board Chair

Peter von Schilling has 25 years of experience in investment management and capital markets. Peter has extensive experience investing institutional capital in U.S. and Canadian listed equity securities with Polar Asset Management, as well as previous experience as an equity research analyst and investing in private equity. As a corporate and not-for-profit director, Peter strives to bring a broad range of skills and experience to boards including independent mindedness, critical judgement, stakeholder understanding and governance aptitude. Peter is currently on the board of Educators Financial Group, JAZZ.FM91 and the Adoption Council of Ontario and on the Investment Committee of the Institute for Research on Public Policy. Peter holds a MBA from INSEAD, a B. Math (Honours) from the University of Waterloo, a Canadian Investment Manager (CIM) designation and the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.

Peter Van Meerbergen

President and Chief Executive Officer

Peter brings exceptional leadership skills, strategic insights, and a depth of industry knowledge to his role as President and CEO.

He has held senior roles in the financial services industry in Ontario, Central Canada, and nationally. These include leadership roles in retail and commercial banking for TD and RBC. In addition, Peter has held Vice-President positions in the wealth management, asset management and insurance fields.

Most recently, Peter was Executive Vice-President of Member Experience at Kawartha Credit Union in Peterborough, Ontario, where he led the Wealth Management, Retail, and Commercial Banking businesses.

He is excited to bring this experience to Educators Financial Group and help empower Ontario education members to reach their financial goals.

Peter holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Western University.

When not behind his desk, Peter enjoys the outdoors, and admits to having the travel bug, which he is treating by discovering our beautiful province and country. He hopes to travel even more extensively in the future.

John Busch

Vice President, Business Technology

John comes to Educators Financial Group after a successful career spanning two decades and a myriad of leadership roles and mission-critical endeavors at NCR, Manulife Financial, Manulife Securities, and Wellington-Altus Private Wealth. He brings a deep technical set of skills and wealth management experience to the new role of Vice President, Business Technology. “Educators has made significant investments in technology in the past few years,” John says. “Ensuring that this technology works reliably, and is secure, is essential to maintaining the trust our clients put in us every day.”

John’s commitment to helping others reach their goals can be seen in his personal life as well, where he’s chalked up 18 years coaching the hockey, baseball, and basketball teams that his three sons have played on.

Jennifer King

Vice President, Human Resources

During the 25+ years Jennifer has worked in people and culture management, she has acquired extensive experience leading organizational transformation, growth through people, employee engagement, succession planning and recruitment strategies. Her passion for problem-solving that benefits both business and employees is evident throughout her career.

Before joining Educators, Jennifer spent three and a half years as Director, Human Resources for the Canadian Credit Union Association. Prior to that position, she spent five years as Director of Human Resources at FORREC Ltd, where she established best practices for the company, including talent acquisition, compensation design, leadership development, benefits, on-boarding, and diversity and inclusion.
Earlier in her career, Jennifer used her entrepreneurial spirit to build a successful consultancy for a wide range of companies. She also played a leadership role and partner in companies such as Fuller Landau LLP, Mondelez International, and AstraZeneca Canada.

Jennifer obtained her Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation in 1998 and volunteers for the Human Resources Professionals Association as Co-Chair of the CHRL and Employment Law Exam Validation Committee.

An avid long-distance cyclist, she has competed in several triathlons of various distances, and completed Ironman Canada in 2010.

Karen Hubbard

Vice President, Client Advisory Services

With 30 years of experience in the financial industry, Karen Hubbard serves as the Vice President of Client Advisory Services, where she leverages her background to enhance client relationships and deliver strategic solutions that meet our members’ unique needs.  Karen began her career at CIBC where she worked in various roles developing expertise in retail banking, small business lending and wealth management.  She holds a Bachelor of Commerce from McMaster University and earned her CFP designation in 2000.  When describing what she enjoys most about working at Educators Financial Group, Karen says, “it’s our team and our clients.  It’s rewarding to work with such a talented group of people who are passionate about providing financial advice and service to the education community.”
